According to the gossip rags, the coquettish cast of Desperate Housewives has decided a new book called The Female Brain is indispensable on the set.
Apparently they think the book by neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine helps to explain the tyranny of their hormones. Crying jags, mood swings, Mommy Brain and emotional imbroglios -- the private domain of all women -- make headlines when they involve Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross or Eva Longoria. The actors consider the breezy, scientific tome a "self-help book."
Ever wonder, for example, why the men in your office work quietly at their computer screens for hours while the women talk incessantly? A woman has 11 per cent more neurons in her brain centre for language and hearing than a man. On average she uses 20,000 words a day. He uses about 7,000.
Ever ponder why men want sex all the time? Women not so much? The brain space devoted to the female sex drive is 2 1/2 times smaller than the space set aside in a man's brain. In this case, size does matter: Women think about sex once a day, while men think about it every 58 seconds.
And what about the fact women seem more emotional? The principal hub for emotion and memory formation -- the hippocampus -- is larger in a woman than in a man. Meanwhile, the amygdala, which registers fear and triggers aggression, is larger in the male brain.
"Women have an eight-lane superhighway for processing emotion, while men have a small country road," Brizendine writes. Yet when it comes to processing thoughts about sex? Men have "O'Hare Airport as a hub," she writes, while women are at "the airfield nearby that lands small and private planes."
Of course that may just be a faulty analysis from her teeny, tiny girl brain. I can't be sure myself since I also have a teeny, tiny girl brain.
And according to the male research behind this bombshell, this lesser intelligence has made it impossible for women to break through the glass ceiling to achieve world domination.
Cast in another light: George W. Bush became the president of the United States thanks to his breathtaking intelligence. Yet if Hillary Clinton fails in her bid, people will say it's because she was just too duh.
This latest research on women's intelligence -- or lack of intelligence -- comes from a man who has made a career out of comparing the brain sizes of different races.
Psychologist J. Philippe Rushton of the University of Western Ontario reports in the journal Intelligence that 17- to 18-year-old males have a slight edge in IQ, based on more than 100,000 SAT scores.
