Gene "The Snowman" Snow surrendered to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department on Sept. 5 after authorities issued a warrant for his arrest on suspicion of aggravated sexual assault of a child, department spokesman Terry Grisham said. Mr. Snow posted $25,000 bail and was released the same day.
Mr. Snow, 69, of Bedford is listed on the National Hot Rod Association's Web site as one the top 50 drivers in the organization's history. He was the first Funny Car driver to break 200 mph and the first Top Fuel driver to travel a quarter-mile in less than 4 seconds, according to the NHRA's site.
A 17-year-old went to sheriff's investigators in July and said that Mr. Snow began molesting him when he was in the fifth grade, according to court documents.
The teen, who was not identified, said he believes that Mr. Snow drugged him at least once and had cut holes in the wall of his guest bedroom so he could watch the boy, the documents state.
Based on the teen's statement, Texas Rangers executed a search warrant in August and seized two computers, several sex toys, pornography and other items, according to court documents.
Mr. Snow has seven misdemeanor citations in Tarrant County for public lewdness and obscenity dating back to 1978. All were dismissed except for one public lewdness charge for which he paid a fine.
