During many quality between-song motivational speeches last night at the FM96 Rocks 1 fest, Danko Jones found a way to keep strutting way over the line.
"Who wants me to shut up and play rock?" the Toronto rocker finally dared the fans on the second night of FM96 Rocks 1 in downtown London last night.
When it appeared enough fans did, he obliged with some tunes. More taunts were to come, all reminiscent of the crowd manipulation of pro wrestlers such as The Rock. Jones looks a bit like The Rock, come to think of it. Last night, he also looked like someone temporarily bored with the sexy talk and hot guitar that used to work at nearby Call the Office.
Danko Jones is a three-piece slice of raw power with a 2006 record to promote. Sleep Is The Enemy (Aquarius/EMI) has been good for the hit singles First Date and Sticky Situation. The trio blasted through the second of those early in the set between rants by the leader. Through all the leader's twists and shouts, bassist John (JC) Calabrese and drummer Dan Cornelius kept straight faces, maintaining the illusion that the leader's rants were no act.
"Nobody's going to stop me from living my dream," Jones insisted over cheers and some jeers from the crowd. Not me, Danko. Dream on, my friend. Your guitar mime to finish was a hoot.
