For the first time since the opening weeks of 2006, Charlotte has a surplus of precipitation for the year.The 3.04 inches of rain that fell Wednesday and early Thursday at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport increased the yearly total to 31.95 inches -- or 0.68 inches above normal for the year. Charlotte had a deficit of almost 10 inches at one point this year, but above-average rainfall in June, August and this month has erased that shortfall.
A hot dog dinner and gospel benefit for drive-by shooting victim Carl Stevenson will be Saturday at Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church in northwest Charlotte.
On April 12, Stevenson, 45, was waiting at a red light on Sunset Road when a car pulled up and a gunman shot six times into his truck with an AK-47 assault rifle. He was hit in his leg, chest and face. Proceeds for the 4 p.m. benefit will go to help with medical and living expenses.

A 51-year-old construction worker was killed Thursday afternoon when he fell about 25 feet from the roof of a building at Winthrop University, according to a university news release. About 2:30 p.m., Wade Henry Dowling of Lancaster fell while working in the upper beams of the Lois Rhame West Center, according to authorities and the news release.He was taken to Piedmont Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
