Patton, no longer the chief after he violated a gag order by speaking to the media about the sex crimes alleged against a South Haven firefighter, was on duty as a paramedic with South Haven on Saturday when the department responded to a call shortly after noon.
Once on the scene, South Haven Capt. Ron Reed attempted to enter the home in Pleasant Valley Mobile Home Park but was inundated with fumes. Reed said Patton and Lt. Ron Brehmer saw the man collapse inside the home and attempted to retrieve him.
Once outside, Reed said Patton collapsed on the porch and was administered aid before being transferred to the Porter hospital's Portage campus, where Patton was treated and released.
Earlier in the week, Michael T. Parsons, a volunteer with South Haven, was charged with raping and molesting a teenage girl and fondling two of the girl's friends in a case that shocked the department as well as police investigators.
“I have to do what I think is right for the township,” said Jent, who fears fire officials could hinder the police investigation with their comments.
