- Best Michael Jackson impersonation: Justin Timberlake rocked the robot and a white-boy version of the moonwalk during his opening performance. He also sounded like a prepubescent teenage boy rocking the high falsetto during the first few bars.
- Best Jack Black Moments: In the show's opener, Black warned the crowd: "This show's been laying farts for the past 20 years, and I'm about to light the match."
Black's wittiest aside came while introducing sex-tape vixen Paris Hilton, referring to her as "the world's most attractive producer of independent film."
- Biggest Upset: The Black Eyed Peas took home the best hip-hop award for My Humps, a song that is neither hip-hop nor good, but does make many references to "lovely lady lumps."
As the camera panned to Kanye West, an actual hip-hop artist with actual talent, you could practically see the fires of hatred burning in his eyes.
- Worst Skit: The usually funny Sarah Silverman was given a decidedly uncomfortably and unfunny bit, which involved a shot of her bragging about how 'N Sync's recently out-of-the-closet singer Lance Bass was hitting on her. After the cameraman informed her Bass was gay, Silverman launched into a cringe-inducing monologue.
- Best Booty-Shaking: Shakira's hips certainly didn't lie as she shimmied and belly-rolled her way through her smash collaboration with Wyclef Jean in a stunning hot-pink, midriff-bearing outfit.
- Silliest Award Introduction: While presenting the award for best dance video, which went to the Pussycat Dolls for their stripper-approved Buttons, Jessica Simpson explained: "I'm just a white girl who can't dance. I can just push my tush. So, my moves never made it up to this level that these performers have made it to - Michael Jackson, Prince, Paula Abdul." Simpson then proceeded to fumble her lines and stammered something about never failing to mess up.
- Best Performance: OK Go made a daring decision to perform the dance from their video Here It Goes Again, which featured the band doing a choreographed routine on eight treadmills, lined up in two rows of four. They slipped between each other's legs, moonwalked on the speeding treads, jumped from treadmill to treadmill and blew the collective mind of everyone watching by their ability to pull it off with not so much as a stumble.
- Stupidest Acceptance Speech: When Pink picked up her award for best pop video for Stupid Girls, which lampoons women who act dumb to impress boys, she did the obvious - and, dare we say, stupid thing - by putting on a fake valley-girl accent.
- Skankiest Outfit: Beyonce started off in a beige trench coat, but that was ripped off during the big finale of her new single, Ring the Alarm, to reveal a barely there pair of latex booty shorts, matching thigh-high boots and bra. Beyonce proceed to do the newly trendy hump-the-floor move, which is always classy.
"You need to lose weight," said Silverman. "I remember when I first heard Stars Are Blind and I thought, wow, this sounds like it was sung by a fat person."
- Biggest Twist: Panic! At the Disco stole video of the year from the veteran hands of Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shakira and Christina Aguilera, despite being shut out in every other category they were nominated in.
